ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:

1.      Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.): Honours in Zoology with Botany and Chemistry as elective subjects from 1988 to 1991, Calcutta University, India.

2.      Master of Science (M.Sc.)Marine Sciences with specialization in Marine Microbiology from 1992 to 1993, Calcutta University, India.

Title of M.Sc Dissertation: "Bacteriological study of Tiger Prawn (Penaeus monodon) in the Sunderbans Mangrove fringe environment, West Bengal, India."

This study included the identification of bacteria present in Penaeus monodon by conventional microbiology and also investigating the bacterial load of the ponds where the prawns are cultured.

3. Pre-Doctoral Research work: Department of Marine Sciences, Calcutta University and National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Calcutta from April 1994 to April 1995.

This study included the isolation of microorganisms present in the brackish water of Sunderbans, West Bengal, India. The isolated microorganisms were further characterized for the uptake of heavy metals like mercury, cobalt, lead and nickel as this area is contaminated with the municipal and industrial wastes.

4.      Ph.D in Science (Microbiology): National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Calcutta, under the supervision of Dr. G. Balakrish Nair, former Deputy Director (presently Director of LSD of ICDDR,B) and Dr. J. Khanam, Reader, Jadavpur University from 1996 to 1999. Awarded in 2001.

Title of Ph.D Thesis:  Molecular ecology of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae.

FELLOWSHIP AWARDED:

  1. Junior Research Fellowship from the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, from April 1994 to April 1995.
